CASE DISMISSED

I immediately canceled my plans to return to Japan from Germany and decided instead to leave for Israel to visit a friend and former roommate. At the very least I could exercise under the hot sun and dedicate myself to taking photographs. As I was walking through the Old City in Jerusalem, I received a call from Mr. A.’s supervisor in the Takanawa Police Department.

He informed me that MPD’s First Investigation Division would be taking over the case. First Investigation also wanted to speak with me directly but had been unable to do so as of yet because of the time difference.

Did that mean they still intended to investigate the case? But, how?

After all, there was no chance of arresting Mr. Yamaguchi, was there?

When I finally spoke with the investigator at MPD in charge of the case, I didn’t get a proper explanation to any of my questions.

For example, why hadn’t the arrest been carried out?

The only response I received was “In order to conduct further investigation.” But for two months the investigation had exhausted every conceivable possibility. The police’s last resort had been to arrest Mr. Yamaguchi in order to forcibly search his laptop for files that might have been recorded there, or any other evidence, before it could be destroyed.

I contacted my uncle, the former prosecutor. He was well versed in the ways that an arrest warrant was handled, and his explanation would prove to be very useful. My uncle told me that once a court had authorized an arrest warrant, it was no simple matter not to carry it out. He advised me to go to MPD with a lawyer present and to inquire about the current status of the arrest warrant.
